How Much Does Packaging Cost?

What price should I expect to pay for e-commerce packaging?

For standard corrugate packaging you can pay as little as 30p a box for large volumes (i.e. 50,000) and up to £5.00 a box for smaller volumes (i.e 100) – this is subject to the size, board grade and print specification.

What’s the most expensive type of packaging?

Paper Over Board is the most expensive – especially rigid boxes. However, collapsible paper-over-board boxes are a more cost-effective option if this is the style you want to go for.

Why are rigid boxes expensive?

Predominantly the materials involved (i.e. the greyboard and paper). These also take a lot of time to produce in comparison to other options due to the high levels of handwork involved.

Why are some packaging companies so cheap?

They use standard sizes (therefore they have existing cutters) and they have stock products that are often from overseas. All our boxes are produced in the UK and we specialise in bespoke options. One size might fit all - but do you really want that for your brand? We help you stand out by designing the box around your product.

How do I get low quantities of boxes produced at a cheaper rate?

Paper Over Board Boxes

The paper spec (i.e. the material it’s lined in) can affect the cost. Cheaper paper = cheaper boxes.

Keep it simple. Complex designs take longer to produce. The simpler the box, the quicker and cheaper it is to produce.

Avoid fancy finishes. Any additional print finishes such as foiling/ embossing/ lamination can drive the price up.

Folding Box Board

The overall sheet size/cutter size/design is the main factor that increases price in folding box board.

Again avoiding fancy finishes. Any additional print finishes such as foiling/embossing/lamination can drive the price up.

Corrugate

Digital printing helps bring the cost down

Adding special touches like peel & seal strips can increase the cost

Printing on both sides of the box (inner and outer) will drive the price up

The board grade and spec can affect the price – for example, B flute is more expensive than E flute
